Vista Crash; embarrassing for Firefox

Well, my Windows Vista crashed several times last night. It was a known bug for Vista running on 64 bit processor. Solution was available on Microsoft site. Funny part is that my Firefox was on and when I did uninstall KB973879 from my system (as stated on MS site) it was not Windows but my Firefox who was embarrassed. Funny na.

"John Markoff has a story at the NY Times speculating about what will happen on April 1 when the Conficker worm is scheduled to activate. Already on an estimated 12 million machines, conjectures about Conficker's purpose ranges from the benign — an April Fool's Day prank — to far darker notions. Some say the program will be used in the 'rent-a-computer-crook' business, something that has been tried previously by the computer underground. 'The most intriguing clue about the purpose of Conficker lies in the intricate design of the peer-to-peer logic of the latest version of the program, which security researchers are still trying to completely decode,' writes Markoff. According to a paper by researchers at SRI International, in the Conficker C version of the program, infected computers can act both as clients and servers and share files in both directions. With these capabilities, Conficker's authors could be planning to create a scheme like Freenet, the peer-to-peer system that was intended to make Internet censorship of documents impossible. On a darker note, Stefan Savage, a computer scientist at the University of California at San Diego, has suggested the possibility of a 'Dark Google.' 'What if Conficker is intended to give the computer underworld the ability to search for data on all the infected computers around the globe and then sell the answers,' writes Markoff. 'That would be a dragnet - and a genuine horror story.'"

Ubuntu Bluetooth

I installed Ubuntu in the summer of 2007 and I am still using it and enjoying. I started with 7.04 and since this is the only OS of my laptop, I now have 8.04.1. I have a Dell Inspiron and it has Bluetooth. We all know that Ubuntu is little backfoot on bluetooth front. I recently cleaned up my system and installed Ubuntu 8.04 from the free CD i got from Canonical. Earlier I had a software to disable bluetooth on my system. I googled many times and did not find anything. Until today when it is a holiday in India and I had nothing to do, I found the software again. And the name is Blueman. It has a preety good and simple interface and I hope one day my bluetooth will work with this. But it has sloved my immediate problem to turn off the bluetooth on my system.

Just wanted to share this as it is not so easy to find it. Here is the link and download instructions are very easy.

Private folder on Ubuntu: Cryptkeeper

Although Team Ubuntu is giving you some privacy in its next release with a new "private" folder, we still need some more. I found a very simple and elegant tool for your private desires. The name Cryptkeeper. Some time back I googled for a private/password protected folder on Ubuntu, but found nothing and suddenly today, I just came across this amazing and simple tool for password protected folders on Ubuntu.

Here is how it works:

When you install it from Add/Remove programs in Ubuntu, it comes with a preety good icon in system tools.

You click it and you will notice a nice key icon in your system tray.

Click the keys and you have the option to create a encrypted folder, like I have created and named it private.

And thats it. You have a folder in which you can keep all your private data. Oh I forgot to mention that, when you create a folder, you will be asked for a password. Wow! Now next time you wana access you private folder, click on the keys and select your folder, you will be prompted with a window for password. Put in the same password and you are in.

Google Gadgets on Ubuntu

Google has just launched Google Gadgets for Linux. Google has extended this tool to Linux, as Windows and Mac users are already enjoying these for a while. If you are using XP, you must have a look at Yahoo Widgets. Vista and MAC users already have this and I don't think they want more. For a bit help I am providing a simple procedure to install Google Gadgets on Ubuntu 8.04.

Go to System —> Administration —> Software Sources, click on the Third-Party tab, then "Add" the following lines

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/googlegadgets/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/googlegadgets/ubuntu hardy main

Then click Close and Reload.

To install Google Gadgets using the following command from terminal

sudo aptitude install google-gadgets

This completes installation.

To run Google Gadgets Press Alt+F2 and type "ggl-gtk" to launch Google Gadgets on desktop and "ggl-gtk -s -bg" for Google Gadgets in sidebar.

Just wondering if you people out there are using Google Reader? This is a wonderful product from Google and has the potential to change the way you use internet. I mean, I have experienced and just wanted to share the same with you.
When ever you seen on any web page, just know that this page has a feed. Click it and you will see the feed page. You can copy the page link and add it to Google Reader subscriptions.
And you no longer have to visit the site to check if same new story has come. Google Reader will catch all the contents for you and serve you hot.

So just give it a try. Have a look at my reader.

I wonder how many of you regularly use Google Talk anymore? Its been ages since the Official Google Talk client was updated. We’ve patiently waited for new features like Group Chat, New Emoticons to make it into Google Talk, but so far that hasn’t happened. Well the Google Talk team has just released a “Labs Edition” of Google Talk which is more or less same as the Google Talk Gadget, just that it is the desktop version of Google Talk Gadget.

The Official Google Docs Blog recently announced they would be slowly rolling out offline access to Google Docs users. At the time, I could only view my synchronized document list and carry out simple actions like renaming and starring documents. But now, in one of my non-Gmail Google Accounts, I can synchronize my documents and work on them offline.

Its been long since I posted some thing. And now when I am posting its a really good thing to share. Its is a new graphics tool that I have installed on my Ubuntu 7.10, the name is Pencil. It is so simple that you will love its interface in the first sight. Please have a look.

It can be downloaded from here.

It lets you create traditional hand-drawn animation (cartoon) using both bitmap and vector graphics. Pencil is free and open source.

Deluge: Torrent Client for Ubuntu

I was not satisfied kind of with the BitTorrent Client in Ubuntu, So I switched to Deluge. You can try this, it looks better and has more features.

Deluge is a full-featured BitTorrent client for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. It uses libtorrent in it's backend and PyGTK for it's user interface.

Deluge features a rich plugin collection; in fact, most of Deluge's functionality is available in the form of plugins.

Deluge was created with the intention of being lightweight and unobtrusive. It is our belief that downloading shouldn't be the primary task on your computer and therefore shouldn’t monopolize system resources.

iSeries Access for Linux (Ubuntu 7.04)

This is a tutorial kind of post for all you iSeries developers. IBM has this beautiful software/emulator available for you on Linux.
Here are the steps for installation on Ubuntu 7.04:
1. Download iSeries Access for Linux from IBM site from here. You will need to register for that.
2. A installation guide is also available for you.
3. One done, convert the .rpm package to .deb package using alien. I good post is available for that here.
4. Next you have to install some dependent libraries with "apt-get install libmotif3" command.
5. Create a Launcher with "/opt/ibm/iSeriesAccess/bin/setup5250" in command line and make it executable.
6. What are you waiting for double click it and enjoy.

Ubuntu: Calling India

Hey All,
I am writing this post as a message to all "geeks" in India. I am using Ubuntu Linux for the past 2 months on my Dell laptop. This is a great system. It works well, no crashes. It is fully loaded and ready to run as you install it. And most of all it is legally free, not like Windows which is illegally free in India. It has more features than Windows XP and more secure. It is not like old Linux distributions where you can not do anything if you do not have ample knowledge of the linux systems. I am not much familiar with linux systems, though I am a software engineer. But I find it much easy to use and it comes with a lot of support. I am not using windows any more. I mean, give it a try if you are getting bore of the that dull XP.

Gmail Introduces iMAP

Oh, how long have I waited for this! Almost three years ago, I blogged about the then newly-introduced POP access for GMail (German) and, to summarize it for you, my conclusion was that POP does not sufficiently support GMail’s specialities, in particular the big storage capacity (downloading tons of mail is no fun) and tagging (which could easily be replicated in IMAP folders).
Now, three years later, GMail implements IMAP and with that, in my opinion, GMail has become a global player in email that now actually deserves the name.
IMAP features are mapped to GMail features reasonably, for example tags to folders as I suggested, or IMAP flags to GMail “stars”.
To test, I connected to my account with Thunderbird, and as far as I can tell now, it works nice and quickly. Good job, Google!
According to Jean Pierre, IMAP is not enabled for all users yet, but I assume everybody will get the feature soon. Once you do, make sure to check it out!

Google has quietly launched its digg competitor at You shared stuff. Its is good but it is not very Google. The application works smart but is also bit bulky type ah kind of. Its definite that Google will improve it. In the meanwhile you can enjoy it here. You can make your profile and start sharing the online stuff. Also you can see what I am sharing at this link.

Firefox 3 Alpha 8 is out!

A new alpha version, to be precise Alpha 8, of the upcoming Mozilla Firefox 3 browser has been released two days ago which introduced several new features such as a build in malware protection which can be tested on a publicly available test environment on the Mozilla website.

Add-ons have to use a secure method for auto-updating from now on which means that they either have to be delivered using SSL or digital signatures. The real progress can be seen when you look at the list of bugfixes from alpha 7 to the current version. More than 1100 bugs have been fixed in that time which is quite an achievement.

Several bugs prevail on the other hand. One for instance prevents that Firefox 3 is starting in Windows Vista if parental controls are enabled. If you have been using prior alpha versions of Firefox 3 you should definitely download the new one and replace the old alpha with it.
